On the Green—Outdoor Sculpture

Shelburne Art Center’s stately gallery provided the setting for its first sculpture exhibition, On the Green, generously sponsored by Redstone. The grand building and lawn are a welcoming attraction for tourists and residents, and a pleasing venue for art. An outdoor sculpture exhibition has been in the planning since the Art Center opened its gallery in the Greek Revival building in the center of the village. On the Green began with the installation of outdoor works by nine artists.

The exhibition included works by several well-known sculptors from Vermont and will feature new work by Vergennes artist Denis Versweyveld. Versweyveld’s sculpture was sponsored by a grant from the Vermont Arts Council. Major work by Cestmir Suska (shown, above) will be on view. Suska, from Prague, Czech Republic, has exhibited widely in Europe and is in residence at Vermont Studio Center in Johnson for the second year. His new work will reflect his interest in and respect for Vermont.

The show expanded in August with the addition of indoor sculpture, including a juried show of artist books.
