Beginner –Try It All

Are you curious about ceramics? Come give it a whirl in this new class where beginners can learn the basics of clay through wheel throwing, hand-building, and decorative techniques.
Week 1: A day on the wheel! Students will learn basic wheel-throwing skills from wedging clay to a finished piece.
Week 2: Students will learn how to finish a piece with trimming and slip and surface decoration on the wheel. We will also discuss throwing with a purpose.
Week 3: Hand-building: cover the basics of slab, coil, and pinch, and create a finished piece using one or all of these methods.
Week 4: Glazing: Students will learn basics of glaze chemistry as well as different techniques to make their piece their own.

With an emphasis on technique and overall form and design, students will create beautiful bowls, pitchers, casserole dishes, garden sculptures, wall plaques, and tiles. During each class there will be a demonstration that will explore techniques in building, altering, and surface decoration including color and glaze.

This class will accommodate all levels of abilities. Beginners will be shown fundamentals and guided in developing strong basic wheel-throwing skills. More experienced students will have individualized instruction in functional or sculptural techniques while considering elements of form and style.

In this class for beginners, students will be shown the fundamentals of wheel-throwing and guided in developing strong basic skills that will get you throwing cylinders, mugs, and bowls in no-time. Application of techniques including wedging, centering, and pulling clay will be demonstrated and executed in a warm, fun, helpful environment.

 

Wheel-Throwing/ Intermediate to Advanced (Day)

This class will explore a variety of throwing and altering techniques with hand-built additions to bring your pottery to a new level. Bring sketches and ideas to this class and let Jules individualize a curriculum for you! Additional skill exploration include: improved centering techniques, surface design, stacked forms, and throwing taller forms, throwing in sets, and creating larger serving pieces, tea and coffee sets, casserole dishes, and storage jars.

Clay Workshop

 

Skin Deep: Alternative Surface Treatment for Sculpture and Pots

One-Day Workshop, 10am-3pm, 3/10

In this one-day workshop we will be using alternative ceramic techniques to explore some non-traditional approaches to finishing work. Some of the topics covered will include under-glaze crayons and pencils. We will also be creating a sculptural effect, called cold finishing, on bisque tiles and experimenting with over-glaze. Please bring work in various stages of finish: leather hard, green ware, bisque tile, and finished work are all welcome!

 

Clay Studio Information

 

Art Center Clay Studio
The Clay Studio is a well equipped facility with 9 electric wheels, 3 kick wheels, an extruder and slab roller. The studio also has wonderful firing facilities including a gas reduction kiln, raku kiln, pit for firing and an electric kiln.

 

Class Fees
Clay classes include open studio time as well as instruction time. A five-week class includes 12.5 hours of instruction and 67.5 hours open studio. A ten-week class includes 25 hours of instruction and 135 hours of open studio.

 

Materials and Firing Fee
Clay class fees include one 25-pound bag of clay per student (10-week classes) or one 12.5-pound bag of clay per student (5-week classes) plus all glazes and firing. Students may purchase additional clay in the studio as needed.

 

Uninstructed Open Clay Studio Hours for Current Students
Enrolled adult students can attend free open studio hours.  Times change each session.
