Summer Camp 2008

Ages 11 and up

July 7-11

 

Mosaic and Experimental Drawing

9:00am-4:00pm

Mosaic: Children will learn the basics of mosaics such as tile preparation, grout mixtures, and even a bit of history of the mosaic. Students will have a choice about what they produce and will leave proud of their work and new skills. Possible products could be tables, planters, or garden stones.

Experimental Drawing: Improve your powers of observation and understanding of drawing techniques. Learn to draw from a variety of interesting sources including the human figure and objects from daily life.

July 14-18


Digital Photography & Photoshop Elements

9:00am-4:00pm

Students will spend the first half of each day at a different outdoor site (weather permitting) taking photos. After lunch, each student will work on a computer at Shelburne Community School learning how to use Photoshop Elements to create different photo effects. Students will depart with a photographic series, new skills, and new compositional considerations. Students should bring their own digital camera and USB cord for downloading their images.

July 21-25

Creative Metal Arts and
Clay on the Wheel

9:00am-4:00pm

Creative Metal Arts: Create amazing works of wearable art while learning basic metalsmithing skills. Using a torch and a hammer you will learn to soften and shape brass, bronze, copper, an nickel silver sheet metal. Learn to drill, saw, file, form, sand, and polish. Use wire to make chain and simple clasps and leather cord and beads to embellish your creations.

Clay on the Wheel: Learn the essentials of working on the potter’s wheel from centering to forming cylinders and bowls. Students will create a variety of forms including bowls, mugs, pitchers, plates, and vases as they improver their wheel throwing skills.

July 28-Aug.1

Advanced Metal Arts and
Clay on the Wheel

9:00am-4:00pm

Advanced Metal Arts: Build on the skills learned in our Metal Arts class. Students will fine tune their soldering techniques and learn how to apply textures and patinas. Children will use various metals including sterling silver to craft projects such as rings, bracelet, and necklaces. (Sterling silver will be purchased at an additional cost.)

Aug. 4-8

Advanced Photoshop Elements

9:00am-4:00pm

Kids will build on skill taught is our Digital Photography & Photoshop Elements class. Campers will gain a new perspective in how layers and the entire tool selection in Photoshop Elements can enhance their photographs. Kids will take photographs outdoors and work on the computer at Shelburne Community School. Kids should be comfortable with their digital camera and on the computer. Kids will bring their own digital camera and USB cord for downloading their images.

Aug. 11-15

Clay on the Wheel and Painting Exploration

9:00am-4:00pm

Clay on the Wheel: See above description.

Painting Exploration: Campers will be introduced to various painting techniques, materials, and styles. Using a variety of sources including objects from nature and photographs, kids will explore the differences among acrylics, water-based oils, watercolor, and learn painting techniques such as under painting and toning canvas. Kids will produce finished paintings drawing inspiration from famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet.
