Experience the exciting transformation of a flat piece of sheet metal into a three-dimensional, functional or sculptural object using a hammer and an acetylene torch. In this intermediate level course, ancient metalsmithing techniques will be demonstrated to teach students to make small copper bowls or vessels that will be used to create candle holders, candle snuffers, bells or small decorative spoons and goblets. Students will investigate the elements of sculptural and functional design by forging thick metal wire and rod into handles and stands. Surface embellishment will be explored by considering hammer marks, wire and metal beads, as well as torch-fired colors and applied patina. Demonstrations will include annealing, work-hardening, sinking, raising, forming, forging, tapering, planishing, filing, sanding, soldering and polishing. Beginners are welcome with the understanding that these techniques will be challenging, time-consuming and require some hand and arm strength.
