How It All Started: Shelburne Art Center History

Gallery on the Green Vermont art galleries The program that today is the Shelburne Art Center was founded in the early 1940s by the Rev. J. Lynwood Smith in the belief that crafts, either as a vocation or an avocation, are an indispensable part of our culture. Classes were first offered in a church rectory and later in the locker room at the public school to teach woodworking as a life skill to young boys of a rural community; classes were soon expanded to include high school students and adults as well. The Shelburne Craft School was incorporated in 1945 as a nonprofit institution dedicated to providing a place for professional craftspeople to work at their craft and to teach that craft to the community.

The popularity of the program necessitated the search for larger quarters, which became available in the form of three wooden frame buildings built in the early 1800s. The first of these, now known as the Red Building, was purchased for one dollar from the owner. The other buildings were purchased for $2,500 with a gift from an anonymous donor. These latter two buildings were joined into one, known as the Bunkhouse because it was used for dormitories by railroad workers in the 1800s. A new structure to house a pottery kiln was built in 1948 with the proceeds from another gift.
